Governor's Cup U-18 Basketball Tournament Returns After 7 Years, Bringing 44 Cebu Teams Together
After being on pause for seven years, the Governor's Cup U-18 Basketball Tournament is officially back — and this time, it's bringing together 44 teams from towns and cities all across Cebu province for a shot at the championship, a cash prize, and a trip to Manila.
The tournament opened with a ceremony at the Mandaue City Sports Complex, where Cebu Gov. Pamela Baricuatro welcomed the young athletes and emphasized that youth development shouldn't stop at the classroom door.
"When we talk about developing our youth, we often talk about education, opportunities, and preparing them for their future. But I believe sports must also be a big part of that conversation," said Gov. Pamela Baricuatro.
According to the Governor, sports give young people a positive space to stay active, build friendships, discover their own abilities, and learn discipline, teamwork, resilience, respect, and sportsmanship. On the basketball court specifically, she said competing doesn't mean tearing others down.
"Pwede ta maningkamot nga mahimong pinakamaayo, pero respetohon gihapon nato ang atong kontra. Mao kana ang healthy competition," she said.

This is where the story hits close to home for Cebuanos — literally. The 44 participating teams come from towns and cities across the province, meaning young athletes from barangays and municipalities that don't always get this level of spotlight now have a provincewide stage to compete on. For many of these players, this could be their first shot at organized competition beyond their hometown courts.
Gov. Baricuatro pointed out that basketball is already woven into everyday life in Cebu — from covered courts in the town plaza to makeshift hoops set up in barangays. Through the Governor's Cup and the province's broader sports development push, the goal is to actively scout and support promising talent that might otherwise go unnoticed outside their local barangay leagues.
"And who knows? Among the young players standing on our courts today may be Cebu's next great athletes," she said.
The tournament is organized by the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission, and local and national officials were on hand for the opening, including members of the Provincial Board, mayors, Capitol officials, and Cabinet Secretary Benjamin Abalos.
What's at Stake

Baricuatro announced an added incentive — the winning team will get an all-expenses-paid trip to Manila for tune-up games, giving the young champions a chance to test their skills against competition outside the province.

"Pildi man o daug, basta gihatag ninyo ang inyong best ug nagdula mo nga adunay respeto ug sportsmanship, naa gihapon moy madala gikan niini nga experience," she said.
Her message to the young athletes competing in this year's Governor's Cup was straightforward:
"Duwa ta. Lingaw ta. Magtinahuray ta. Ug ipakita nato unsa ka-maayo ang kabatan-onang Sugboanon."
