Choi-Wan Now a Super Typhoon, But Trough Continues to Soak Visayas, Mindanao

PAGASA: Super Typhoon Choi-Wan Intensifies Further, Trough Still Bringing Rain to Visayas, Mindanao

PAGASA's 5 AM weather update on Monday, October 5, 2026, reported that Typhoon Choi-Wan has intensified into a super typhoon, with winds near the center now reaching up to 195 km/h.

PAGASA said it is unlikely that Choi-Wan will enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), as the storm is expected to continue moving north toward Japan. Its center is currently located more than 2,600 km east of Extreme Northern Luzon.

Despite being far from the country, Choi-Wan's trough continues to affect the Visayas and Mindanao, bringing scattered rain today. PAGASA said this trough effect is expected to last only for today, as the typhoon is forecast to move farther away tomorrow. PAGASA added that the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is expected to take over tomorrow, affecting Palawan, the Visayas, and Mindanao. Winds from the northeast are also expected to affect Extreme Northern Luzon tomorrow.

Visayas and Mindanao: cloudy skies, scattered rain today

Due to Choi-Wan's trough, Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms today. The same condition is expected in the Negros Island Region, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Southern Leyte, and Leyte.

Rest of the country

In Luzon, PAGASA forecast generally fair and favorable weather today, though isolated rain showers or sudden downpours are still possible, particularly in the afternoon or evening.

Sea conditions

No gale warning is up today, meaning no rough waves are expected across the country, so sea travel remains safe for the public.

Sunrise and sunset

The sun will rise at 5:46 a.m. and set at 5:43 p.m. today.
