Talisay City Joins Quad-City Cooperative Month Celebration
TALISAY CITY, Cebu — Talisay City took part in this year's Quad-City Cooperative Month Celebration, together with Mandaue, Cebu City, and Lapu-Lapu.
In a Facebook post, Talisay City Mayor Samsam Gullas said he is proud and grateful that the city was given the opportunity to join the celebration. He said that when cooperatives are well-led and well-organized, they can serve as a model for other organizations in the city.
"I believe that cooperatives may be small organizations in our cities, but their contribution to our communities is far from small," Gullas said.
Why cooperatives matter
According to Gullas, cooperatives show what can happen when people pool their resources, work together, and unite toward one common goal. He said meaningful progress begins when people come together.
He added that cooperatives are part of something much bigger, contributing to the economic and social progress of communities, the city, and even the whole province. He also said he was happy that cooperatives were given recognition and the chance to be part of the celebration, saying it is something they truly deserve.
What the city government has done
Gullas said the city government has taken concrete steps to strengthen and support cooperatives:
Cooperative Department. The city government established a Cooperative Department, a dedicated office that attends to the concerns, needs, and development of cooperatives. The aim is for cooperatives to receive the proper support, guidance, and coordination so they can become more organized, sustainable, and effective in serving their members and communities.
City Council support. The city also recognizes the role of cooperatives through the support of the City Council.
Representation. Cooperatives play a significant role not only in city building but also in nation building, and are represented in the city's development councils, where they can share ideas, experiences, and resources in shaping the city's development.
Gullas said these initiatives are the city government's way of showing that cooperatives matter.
Message to cooperatives
He said every sector, organization, and community group has a role to play in the city's progress. He thanked cooperative leaders, officers, members, and partners for their commitment, hard work, and continued service, and called on everyone to keep supporting cooperatives, strengthen partnerships, and create more opportunities for the people.
