Construction underway on ₱22.4-M Daanbantayan District Hospital upgrade
CEBU — Barely a month since the groundbreaking last Aug. 22, construction work has already started on the ₱22.4-million infrastructure upgrade of the Daanbantayan District Hospital, one of the hospitals under the Cebu Provincial Government in northern Cebu.
The project forms part of the Capitol's continuing effort to improve its 16 Capitol-run hospitals under the administration of Gov. Pamela Baricuatro.
"This is only one part of the major work happening across our 16 Capitol-run hospitals," said Capitol Piso Health Consultant Dr. Nikki Baricuatro Catalan-Viscayno, who was tasked by the governor to oversee reforms and upgrades at all hospitals managed by the Province.
"There is still much to be done, but every improvement brings us closer to safer facilities, better services, and a stronger healthcare system for the Cebu Province," she added.
What the upgrade covers
Per the information released, the project will put up the following:
A new outpatient department (OPD) and pharmacy building
Dietary building
Linen and laundry building
Ambulance parking and maintenance building
Hazardous waste storage facility
Morgue
A covered walkway connecting the main hospital to the new OPD is also part of the plan — a small but welcome addition, especially come rainy season, so patients and hospital staff won't have to brave the elements just to move from one building to another.
Repairs are likewise lined up for the emergency room, laboratory, radiology, and business office complex, on top of repainting works and fixes to the hospital's perimeter fence.
Rapid growth at the Daanbantayan facility
What's worth pointing out here, and something that could easily get buried in the press statement, is just how fast the Daanbantayan District Hospital has grown in a little over a year. As recent as June 2025, this was still a 10-bed infirmary — barely enough to serve the town, let alone the neighboring areas that depend on it. Today, it's running on 22 beds, nearly double what it used to have.
That kind of growth says a lot about why this infrastructure push matters now. It's not just about adding new buildings for the sake of it — it's about the hospital catching up to the number of patients it's already serving from Daanbantayan and the towns around it in northern Cebu.
These upgrades also tie into a bigger target: getting the Daanbantayan District Hospital reclassified as a Level 1 hospital. Under Department of Health (DOH) standards, that classification requires the hospital to meet certain benchmarks across infrastructure, equipment, personnel, and services — so the new buildings going up now are essentially building blocks toward that goal, not standalone projects.
