1,257 Solo Parents Receive ₱3,000 Cash Aid in Lapu-Lapu City
Lapu-Lapu City conducted the payout of the third quarter Solo Parent Cash Subsidy at the Barangay Buaya Gymnasium this Wednesday, benefiting 1,257 solo parents from 30 barangays who each received ₱3,000. The activity was facilitated by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) in coordination with the City Treasurer's Office.
Aside from the cash assistance, the city also gave out Solo Parent Purchase Booklets to qualified solo parents with children aged six years old and below. The booklet gives a 10% discount on essential items such as milk, diapers, vitamins, and medicines.
One of the beneficiaries, Juvenile Diangco, 49, a solo parent from Barangay Calawisan, thanked the city government for the assistance.
"Kami nga nag-inusara ra, dako jud kaayo ni nga tabang para namo. Para sa allowance sa among anak ug sa mga needs, makatabang jud kaayo ni nga maka-provide mi. Sa Chan administration, daghan kaayong salamat" (For us who are raising our children alone, this is a big help. It really helps provide for our child's allowance and needs. To the Chan administration, thank you very much), she said.
Neicy Gozon, 38, of Barangay Ibo, also expressed her appreciation, especially with the rising cost of basic goods and school expenses.
"Dako na kaayog tabang namo ni nga gihatag sa Government. Naghatag ni namo og kaabag, especially karon nga nagkamahal na jud ang mga palitonon ug pangbaon sa mga bata sa eskwelahan" (This is a big help that the Government gave us. It has given us support, especially now that the price of goods and school allowance for children has gone up), Gozon said.
Not the First Time
This isn't the first payout of its kind in Lapu-Lapu. The city started giving cash assistance to low-income solo parents back in March 2024, when 692 beneficiaries received ₱3,000 each during the first payout at the Hoops Dome in Barangay Gun-ob, led by Mayor Junard "Ahong" Chan and Rep. Ma. Cynthia "Cindi" King-Chan. The number of beneficiaries has since almost doubled, indicating that more solo parents in the city have qualified for or applied for the program over time.
The subsidy program is anchored on City Ordinance 16-120-2023, which adopted Republic Act 11861 or the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2022. The law encourages LGUs to give a monthly cash subsidy to solo parents earning minimum wage and below. Lapu-Lapu was among the first LGUs in the region to roll out this kind of assistance.
Practical Details
The payout was held at the Barangay Buaya Gymnasium, with beneficiaries from all 30 barangays of Lapu-Lapu City attending. Each qualified solo parent received ₱3,000 for the third quarter, while those with children aged 0-6 also got the Solo Parent Purchase Booklet good for a 10% discount on essential items. The release did not specify the schedule for solo parents who were unable to claim their subsidy during the payout — those affected may want to follow up directly with the CSWDO or their barangay's Solo Parent Desk.
