103 FAMILIES HIT BY MAMBALING FIRE
CEBU CITY — More than a hundred families were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs after fire razed Sitio Lawis, Barangay Mambaling on September 18, 2026, the City Government's Public Information Office (PIO) said.
As of the 4 p.m. final report, 103 families or 386 individuals were displaced by the blaze, which hit 48 houses in the sitio — 41 totally damaged, one partially damaged, four with slight damage, and two more structures tagged by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) as damaged.
Of the households hit, 59 were sharers, two were renters, and 10 were lodgers — a mix that says a lot about how packed the area is, the usual setup in Cebu City's informal settlements.
What the city is doing
The City Government wasted no time registering the fire victims and internally displaced persons (IDPs), the PIO said. Verification and validation of the affected families are set on the first and second days following the fire — standard procedure meant to sort out who actually qualifies for aid, especially with so many sharers and lodgers who don't hold any paperwork on the property itself.
Hot meals were already served to residents, while the displaced are now billeted at Viking Gym, which is serving as the evacuation center.
The concerned offices are also pushing to have the IDPs recommended for financial assistance, chargeable against the city's disaster account. They will likewise be assessed for relief goods — rice, basic essentials, and housing materials to help them rebuild.
Why this keeps happening in Mambaling
This isn't Mambaling's first rodeo. The barangay has long carried a reputation as one of Cebu City's most fire-prone and congested areas, packed with houses built close together out of light materials.
What's uncanny is the date — September 18 — because seven years ago, on the very same day in 2019, fire also tore through Sitio Wang-yu and Sitio Alaska in the same barangay, displacing roughly 100 families or more than 400 people, based on a Cebu Daily News report from that time.
Mambaling has seen this play out again and again over the years. In March 2021, fire destroyed 59 houses in Sitio Club Kawayan. On October 31, 2022, another fire tore through the barangay, destroying 110 houses and displacing 527 families. Then that December, about 300 families and 150 houses were hit in Sitio Wang-yu.
Mambaling isn't alone either — 2026 has already been a rough year for fires across Cebu City. Barangay Guadalupe was hit on March 2, Barangay Kasambagan lost 52 houses on March 7, and Barangay Ermita burned on April 4, the last of which was one of five separate fires that struck Cebu, Mandaue, and Lapu-Lapu in a single night.
Fire investigators keep pointing to the same reasons why blazes spread so fast in sitios like Lawis: tightly packed communities, houses built from light materials, and structures crammed too close to one another.
