AGASA: Typhoon Choi-Wan Intensifies Overnight, Trough to Bring Rain Over Western Visayas, Leyte

PAGASA's 5 AM weather update on Saturday, October 3, 2026, reported that Typhoon Choi-Wan, which remains outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), intensified into typhoon category at 8:00 PM last night while moving across the Pacific Ocean. The storm's center was last spotted 2,430 km east of Northern Luzon.

Choi-Wan now carries winds of up to 130 km/h near the center, with gusts of up to 160 km/h. It is currently moving north at 10 km/h and may head toward Japan. PAGASA said the typhoon will not directly affect the Philippines, since it remains far from Philippine territory and is not expected to enter PAR.

However, the typhoon's tail end, or trough, is currently affecting the Visayas and Mindanao. PAGASA said this trough will continue to affect Palawan, the Visayas, and Mindanao over the next 2 to 3 days, bringing cloudy skies and occasional rain to these areas. Luzon, on the other hand, will see less cloudy weather over the same period.

Visayas and Mindanao: rain expected from Choi-Wan's trough

PAGASA said Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, and Central Visayas may experience rain today due to the trough. Some parts of Leyte and Southern Leyte are also included among the areas expected to see rain, along with all of Mindanao.

Other parts of the Visayas, along with Palawan, will be hot and humid in the morning until noon, though localized thunderstorm activity is still possible in the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures in Palawan, the Visayas, and Mindanao will range between 24 to 33°C, with the highest expected in Tacloban at up to 34°C.

PAGASA advised the public, especially senior citizens and those with comorbidities, to stay hydrated and to stay indoors if there is no important business outside.

Habagat nearing its end

PAGASA also noted that the Southwest Monsoon, or habagat, is showing signs of ending soon, with rains already decreasing in the western part of the country. PAGASA said it may declare the termination of the habagat within the next few days, which would also mark the end of the rainy season.

After the habagat ends, the country will move into a transition period toward the amihan, or Northeast Monsoon. During this transition, rains are expected to shift from the western section of the country to the eastern section, driven by weather systems such as the easterlies, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and possible new low pressure areas.

Rest of the country today

In Luzon, PAGASA forecast generally fair weather conditions for today, though isolated rain showers from localized thunderstorms are still possible in the afternoon and evening. The highest temperature expected is in Tuguegarao, which may reach up to 35°C, while Metro Manila will see a range of 24 to 32°C.

Sea conditions

No gale warning is currently up.

Sunrise

In Metro Manila, the sun will rise at 5:46 a.m. today.
