Philippines Sends First Commercial Mango Shipment to Canada
The Philippines has made its first commercial shipment of fresh Carabao mangoes to Toronto, Canada, marking another step in the government's push to diversify export markets for Philippine agricultural products. The shipment was sent off during a ceremony at the Philippine Airlines cargo terminal in Pasay City on June 3, with government officials and industry stakeholders in attendance.
According to the Department of Agriculture (DA), the fresh mangoes were supplied by Philippine exporters Hi-Las Marketing Corp. and Castillo Import Export Ventures Inc., with Ontario-based TSI Tropicals Inc. as the importer, and the shipment will be delivered through a commercial air freight program via Philippine Airlines. The transaction was coordinated by the Philippine Agriculture Office in Washington, together with the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto and the Philippine Trade and Investment Center in Toronto, alongside mango industry stakeholders. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. described the shipment as part of the government's broader strategy of expanding market reach for Philippine farm products, noting that it opens the door for other countries to experience Philippine produce. The Canada shipment follows a similar milestone shipment made to Rome, Italy the previous year, and comes as the DA continues to promote a wider portfolio of high-value export crops, including bananas, pineapples, durian, pomelo, avocado, dragon fruit, calamansi, and cacao, among others.
